Darwin, and whilst I can’t remember the actual date, it was the day that one of the big excursions across the border happened. I can’t recall whether it was Zambia or Mozambique, but they had just about every chopper and Lynx there, and I recall that Kevin Peinke and Baldy Baldwin were 2 of the chopper pilots at the time. It was my first time back in an armoured car for a little while, and I don’t think I’ve ever seen so many people at one FAF at any time. I don’t know if this is any help but I assume that someone has records of dates of big external excursions. We were overflowing, some of us sleeping in buildings that were next to, but not actually on, the FAF, and it is the only time I ever saw John Barnes out of New Sarum. Anyway, I don’t mean to make light of the John Barnes situation, but it was early that morning, when everyone was getting ready for the attack, that John Barnes collapsed. There can’t have been so many externals from Darwin that the date couldn’t be worked out. Bill Watt (RhAF) Writes:- Having read the reminders I recall being at MT Darwin as part of the fire force team that were involved in the Tembue raid in Mozambique north of Carborabassa . WO 1 Barnes was coordinating the crews to the numerous choppers lined up on the runway prior to the raid when he suffered a heart attack . The date in my log book is 26th November 1977 I am not sure but I think he died the next day. Steve Caldwell and I recovered him on the August 30th 1977. GOLF SHIELD - BULAWAYO Alan Bradnick (RhAF) Writes:- I played golf yesterday at the Bulawayo Golf Club and the Manager gave a golf shield that he had found in their store room. In the centre of the shield is a very attractive Royal Air Forces Association metal badge. This wooden shield was presented by : THE BULAWAYO BRANCH (1ST RHODESIA) ROYAL AIR FORCES ASSOCIATION. There are 9small shields around the edge of this wooden shield and it was first played for in 1968, and last played for in 1974. The winners on that occasion were R.V. Wright and B.T. Bell. I have tried to find out if there are still any RAF Association members in Bulawayo but have not discovered any as yet. I was wondering if maybe there is some one amongst your readers who will know anything about this shield. (ORAFs will be receiving a photograph of the shield from Alan. Eddy Norris) MEMORABILIA - SOUTHERN RHODESIA - 1930 TO 1970 John Hepple (RhAF) Writes:- A correction to the photographs on the Rhodesian Heritage site. Photo 21 is not of the Kariba dam wall but rather that of Lake Kyle. SMILE A WHILE A senior citizen drove his brand new BMW Z4 convertible out of the car salesroom. Taking off down the motorway, He floored it to 100mph, enjoying the wind blowing through what little hair he had left. \"Amazing!\" he thought as he flew down the M1, enjoying pushing the pedal to the metal even more. Looking in his rear view mirror, he saw a police car behind him, blue lights flashing and siren blaring. \"I can get away from him - no problem!\" thought the elderly nutcase as he floored it to 120mph,then 130mph then 140mph Suddenly, he thought, \"What on earth am I doing? I\'m too old for this nonsense!\" So he pulled over to the side of the road and waited for the police car to catch up with him. Pulling in behind him, the police officer walked up the driver\'s side of the BMW, looked at his watch and said, \"Sir, my shift ends in 10 minutes. Today is Friday and I\'m taking off for the weekend. If you can give me a reason why you were speeding that I\'ve never heard before, I\'ll let you go.\" The old man, looked very seriously at the policeman, and replied, \"Years ago, my wife ran off with a policeman. I thought you were bringing her back.\" \"Have a good day, Sir\", said the policeman \"My wife and I went to a hotel where we got a water-bed. My wife calls it the Dead Sea \" End of Newsletter Comments are always welcome - send them to Eddy Norris at orafs11@gmail.com End Ref. Rhodesian Air Force, ORAFs
