TERENCE MURPHY
Mike Borlace (RhAF) Writes:-
Reference Terence Murphy. What a sad thing - a very good fire force operator.
Although it is not mentioned in his biography as depicted in the \"Flying Marines\" and \"ORAFs\" websites, I believe he was selected as the first Royal Marine to do an F-4K (Phantom) conversion. I had a long conversation with him at Umtali once and a long time back saw some correspondence about this in Marine / Fleet Air Arm exchanges. Unfortunately I cannot remember if he actually started the course, but I believe it was curtailed for \'political\' reasons. It is possible that this was a factor in his somewhat abrupt and early resignation from the Corps and eventual arrival on 7 Squadron.
One of the best K-Car fire force commanders - and a really good man.

HRH PRINCE CHARES 65TH BIRTHDAY - NOVEMBER 14 2013
Cliff Potter (RhAF) Writes:-
I would like to share a story of a day in my life which happened 65 years ago.
On 14th November 1948 I was serving as Stores Assistant on board aircraft carrier HMS Illustrious. We were deployed in the North sea performing day and night Seafire deck landing trials. Using the ship\'s Tanoy the Captain instructed us all to assemble on the flight deck as he had an important announcement to make.
1600 members of crew assembled on the deck to be informed that a Royal baby boy had been born, that very day, who would one day be the King of England. He then ordered the ship\'s company to accept a double tot of rum (1/2 pint) in his honour to splice the main brace. That day will remain in my memory for ever. 6 months later I left to find my place in the sun, Southern Rhodesia, where I remained for the next 56 years. What a wonderful, wonderful time I had.

DORIS LESSING DIES AGED 94
The novelist Doris Lessing, who tackled race, ideology, gender politics and the workings of the psyche in a prolific and often iconoclastic career, died in London on Sunday at the age of 94, her publisher HarperCollins said.
Lessing won the Nobel Prize for Literature in 2007, only the 11th woman to do so, but characteristically refused to offer the expected gushing response on hearing the news, observing drily: \"One can get more excited than one gets, you know.\"

SMILE A WHILE
A young Army officer was severely wounded in the head by a grenade, but the only visible, permanent injury was that both of his ears were amputated.
Since his remaining hearing was sufficient, he remained in the Army.
Many years later he eventually rose to the rank of Major General. He was, however, very sensitive about his appearance. One day the General was interviewing three servicemen who were candidates for his headquarters staff.
The first was a Captain, a tactical helicopter pilot, and it was a great interview. At the end of the interview the General asked him, \'Do you notice anything different about me?\'
The young officer answered, \'Why, yes, Sir, I couldn\'t help but notice that you have no ears.\'
The general was displeased with his lack of tact and threw him out.
The second interview was with a Navy Lieutenant, and he was even better. The General then asked him the same question,
\'Do you notice anything different about me?\'
He replied sheepishly,\' Well, sir, you have no ears.\' The General threw him out also.
The third interview was with a old Sergeant Major, an Infantryman and staff-trained NCO. He was smart, articulate, fit, looked sharp, and seemed to know more than the two officers combined.
The General liked this guy, and went ahead with the same question, \'Do you notice anything different about me?\' To his surprise the Sergeant Major said,
\'Yes, sir, you wear contact lenses.\'
The General was very impressed and thought, \'What an incredibly observant NCO, and he didn\'t mention my ears.\' He asked, \'Sergeant Major, how do you know I wear contacts?\'
\'Well, sir,\' the soldier replied, \'It\'s pretty hard to wear glasses with no flipping ears.’
